Suet Balls for birds. The perfect recipe for a wintery weekend with the family.
During the winter the little birds burn through calories to keep warm and with frost on the ground and very little in flower there is a shortage of food available.
Making fat balls is super easy. They are basically 1 part fat to 2 parts dry mix.
The dry mix is a good quality bird seed, and you can even mix in some grated cheese and mealworms. We love Johnson and Jeff, high energy and no mess.
For the fat, choose a lard or suet and heat it up so it melts.
Once melted, mix in all the dry ingredients and leave to one side to cool. Cool to touch.
Have you got bird food peanut butter... Add some in. Just increase the dry mix a little to help them set.
Balls?
As it begins to feel much cooler but still soft enough to be worked, grab a hand full of the mix and squeeze in to balls. Place the balls on a plate or baking tray and put them in the fridge.
Tray Bake?
Put the mixed ingredients in a tray lined with baking paper and flatten. Put the tray in the fridge to set for an hour. Cut out squares to serve to the birds.
